Going from VMware NSX 6.2.6 and 6.2.7 to 6.3.x

This might be for granted for some, but I thought I would do a quick blog about it as I did some research and didn’t find what I have been looking for.

If you’re currently on NSX 6.2.4 or 6.2.5 you should NOT consider upgrading to 6.2.6 or 6.2.7 unless you’re absolutely forced to and by forced to I mean you’re facing a catastrophic issue leading to all sorts of production downtime.

Why? Simply because there is no upgrade path from 6.2.6 or 6.2.7 to 6.3 or 6.3.1 :-), and if you’re doing a Cross vCenter implementation and you want to benefit from the new features then you will not be able to *sadly*.

On the other hand, the release notes for both 6.2.6 and 6.2.7 do not mention this explicitly and it is advised to look at the upgrade path in the interoperability matrix.

Please don’t get me wrong, I am not frustrated with this but I would have loved to get an explicit message in red telling me that if you upgrade to this version you will not be able to upgrade to the latest and then I would be advised to consult with the interoperability matrix.

Anyway, this is just a heads up so that to build your expectation and even if you have a serious issue I would see if upgrading to 6.3.1 is feasible to resolve your issues rather than getting stuck on a certain version and waiting for a release or patch to be supported for an upgrade.

Now for the fun part ;-), if you’re like me and believe in seeing the error for your eyes it seems VMware were not kidding about it %) I did try to upgrade an NSX Manager from 6.2.6 and 6.2.6 to 6.3.0 and 6.3.1 and I got a message stating the this bundle does not support upgrading the current version and it lists the viable version for upgrading.

We are also stuck in updating to NSX 6.3 / vSphere 6.5 because of we updated to NSX 6.2.6 earlier. We also find afterwards the interoperability matrix with the information we wish to read earlier… Hopefully VMware will release a upgradepath soon.

Yesterday, VMware released NSX 6.3.2 and you/we are able to update NSX from 6.2.6 of 6.2.7 to 6.3.2 :) So we are also able to update to VMware (vCenter/ESXi) 6.5! We will update this weekend/next week to NSX 6.3.2 (from 6.2.6) vCenter/vCA to 6.5.0d (from 5.5U3). vCloud is already on 8.20. SRM will be updates to 6.5.

Yup, haven’t tested the upgrade yet (looking forward to doing it this weekend). Good luck with the upgrade yourself and thank you for sharing the information.
